Question : CLEANING OF RIVER



(a) whether the Government have implemented any action plan to clear river Nandika and Brahmani in Orissa;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the steps taken to implement the said action plan ?

(a) to (c) Brahmani, of which Nandira is a tributary, is covered under the ongoing National River Conservation Plan and works in three towns namely; Talcher, Chandbali and Dharamshala at an estimated cost of Rs. 9.94 crore have been included for pollution abatement. Works such as interception, diversion and treatment of sewage flowing into the river, low cost toilets, crematoria, river front development and afforestation are covered under the Plan. Industrial pollution is monitored and controlled under the environmental laws. According to the Orissa State Pollution Control Board, after the breach of ash pond at Captive Power Plant of NALCO (National Aluminium Company Limited) that occurred on 31.12.2000, Nandira river has been completely dredged by NALCO as per the directives issued by the State Pollution Control Board.
