Question : IMPACT OF COMPUTERS ON EYES



(a) whether the attention of the Government has been drawn to the news-item captioned `Computer users vulnerable to eye complaints` appearing in the `Statesman` dated May 5, 2001;

(b) if so, whether any research have been made by the Government on the impact of computers on eyes;

(c) if so, the details thereof; and

(d) the steps taken proposed to be taken to protect the eyes from the adverse affect of computers?

(a) Yes, Sir.

(b) to (d) According to ICMR, Research work on this issue has been published in various international journals. The main symptoms found in these studies relate to exaggeration of the residual refractive errors and convergence deficiencies. It also results in symptoms like redness of eye etc. Computer users may take precautions as advised by the treating physicians to avoid possible ill effects.
