Question : TECHNOLOGY FOR REPROCESSING OF SPENT FUEL



a] whether India has the requisite expertise/technology for reprocessing of the spent fuel from its reactors;

[b] if so, the details thereof; and

[c] if not, the steps/measures taken by the Government in this regard?

a) Yes Sir.

b) The reprocessing programme in the country was initiated in the year 1961. Based on the indigenously developed technology, the first reprocessing plant was built and commissioned at Trombay in the year 1964. Spent fuel from ‘CIRUS’ and ‘DHRUVA’ Research Reactors is reprocessed in this plant.

Two more reprocessing plants have been indigenously built and commissioned at Tarapur & Kalpakkam in the year 1975 & 1998 respectively for reprocessing of the spent fuel from power reactors.
