Question : Smuggling in Border Areas

(a) whether various items including narcotics and weapons are being smuggled into the country on a large scale from across the border;

(b) if so, the details of the cases reported, smugglers arrested and the quantum of narcotics and weapons confiscated during each of the last three years and the current year, border-wise;

(c) whether the terrorist outfits active in the country are involved in the smuggling of the said items;

(d) if so, the details of such cases that came to light during the said period, border wise; and

(e) the steps taken by the Government to curb cross-border smuggling?

(a) & (b): There are cases of smuggling of narcotics and weapons into the country from across the border. The details of the cases reported, smugglers arrested and the quantum of narcotics and weapons confiscated during each of the last three years and the current year, border-wise, are given at ‘Annexure’.

(c) & (d): There have been no reports of involvement of terrorist outfits in cross-border smuggling of narcotics and weapons.

(e): To check cross border smuggling of narcotics and weapons along India’s international borders, the Government have adopted a multi-pronged approach which, inter-alia, includes round the clock surveillance & patrolling on the borders and establishment of observation posts; construction of border fencing, border patrol roads and flood lighting; introduction of modern and hi-tech surveillance equipment; introduction of technological solutions for improved border surveillance, upgradation of intelligence set up and coordination with the State Governments and concerned intelligence agencies.
