Question : USE OF MINING PROFIT FOR WELFARE ACTIVITIES



(a) whether the Government proposes to make it mandatory for the mining companies to earmark their profit for the welfare of local and tribal people of the country; and;

(b) if so, the details thereof. State-wise and the time by which such proposal likely to be implemented?

(a) and (b): In terms of National Mineral Policy, 2008 which enunciates that special care will be paid to protect the interests of host and indigenous (tribal) population in the mining operations, the Government has drafted a new Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Bill, 2010. The Government has constituted a Group of Ministers to consider various view points on the draft Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Bill, 2010, and give its recommendation to the Government. Since the draft Act is under consideration, the specific measures and provisions are not yet finalised.
