Question : MODERNISATION OF KOLKATA AND CHENNAI AIRPORTS



(a) Whether the Government proposes to modernise Kolkata and Chennai Airports as reported in The Times of India, dated April 3, 2006;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the estimated expenditure expected to be incurred on modernisation of these airports and how it is proposed to be mobilised; and

(d) the time by which the work is likely to be started?

(a) The Government wishes to develop and modernise Chennai and Kolkata airports.

(b),(c) & (d):- The major works in progress/proposed to be taken at the Kolkata airport are:-

Construction of Integrated Cargo Complex, Reconstruction of International Departure Terminal Building, Construction of facilitation lobby, linking corridor for `Circular Railway` from Dum-Dum to Kolkata airport, Extension of Secondary Runway, Resurfacing of Secondary Runway, Construction of cargo apron towards northern side and proposal for domestic parking stand at an estimated cost of Rs.352.10 crores. The above works are likely to be completed by the year 2007-2008.

The major works in progress/proposed to be taken at Chennai airport are:- Construction of Administrative Building, Construction of 5 nos. night parking bays, construction of 10 Remote Parking Bays for AB-321 aircraft, construction of Integrated Cargo Complex and construction of Aero-link and provision of aerobridge and travelator for bay nos. 24, 25 & 29 at an estimated cost of Rs.119.48 crores. The above works are likely to be completed by the year 2007-2008.

The above expenditure is proposed to be met by internal resoures of AAI.
