Question : GROUNDED AIRCRAFT OF AIR INDIA

f

(a) the total number of aircraft of Air India grounded during each of the last three years and the current year and the reasons therefor;

(b) the impact of the grounded aircraft on the normal operations of Air India;

(c) the amount spent on insurance of these grounded aircrafts annually by Air India along with the reasons therefor; and

(d) the steps taken by the Government to check infructuous expenditure of Air India in this regard?

(a): The details of grounded aircraft of Air India during the last three yeans and current year are as below:

One 320 aircraft has been revived and operationalized on 13.11.2014.
The reasons for grounding of aircraft are as annexed.

( b): There has no significant impact of the grounded aircraft on the normal operations of Air India.

(c) and (d): Air India has to insure the grounded aircraft for the Hull value and for the Hull War risk and third party liability. It is a usuial practice for airline operators to insure the grounded aircraft against own damage as well as third party liability risks. As these aircraft are parked on the airport premises, in case of, any damage to airport or third party properties, the airport authorities / third parties are liable to hold the operator responsible for any claims.
Presently the grounded aircraft are insured against own damage for an agreed value of US$50,000 eacfa and also against any third party risks including terrorism risks. The aircraft that are grounded temporarily are insured for the full year at the beginning of the year and proportionate refund is received for the grounded days from the insurer.
