MINISTER OF THE STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND MINISTER OF THE STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS, FOOD AND PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION PROF. K.V. THOMAS

(a)to(c): Target for foodgrains including wheat are fixed every year by the Government of India based on various factors including the past trends of production of these crops, demand of growing population, prevailing world market prices, the requirement for human consumption, and other uses, rainfall pattern and buffer stocks for the next year. The targets are fixed in each year in consultation with State Government during National Kharif/Rabi conference. The final estimates of production for the year 2009-10 are yet to be released by the Government.

The estimated production of foodgrains during 2008-09 was 234.47 million tonnes which is higher than projected demand of about 219.01 million tonnes for the year 2008-09 as indicated in the Working Group Report of Planning commission on “Crop Husbandry, Agricultural Inputs, demand and supply projection and Agricultural Statistics” for 11th five year plan.
