Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE (SHRI A. RAJA)

(a) The State-wise number of cases of acute diarrhoeal diseases, whooping cough, measles, acute respiratory infections, pneumonia, tuberculosis and meningococcal meningitis during the period 1997-99, as reported by the Central Bureau of Health Intelligence is at Annexure-I. These include cases in children. The National programme for Control of Blindness does not collect data regarding blindness among children due to measles, pneumonia, meningitis and malnutrition. The State-wise nutritional status of children reported in the National Family Health Survey 1992-93 and 1998-99 are given at Annexure-II and III respectively.

(b) to (d) The World Health Organisation does not implement any child health programme directly in any State. However, this organization provides technical inputs to the ongoing Reproductive and Child Health programme, which is being implemented in all States. World Health Organisation and UNICEF are also providing technical and some financial inputs for the Pulse Polio Immunization programme, which aims to eradicate poliomyelitis from all States and Union Territories. In addition, UNICEF is collaborating with Government of India and State Governments in implementing certain specific programmes details of which are at Annexure-IV.

The interventions for improvement of child health being implemented under the Reproductive and Child Health Programme include immunization against six vaccine preventable diseases (including elimination of neonatal tetanus and control of measles); control of diarrhoeal diseases and acute respiratory infections; provision of essential newborn care; and prophylaxis and treatment of iron deficiency anaemia and vitamin A deficiency. Exclusive Breastfeeding and appropriate complementary feeding practices are being promoted to improve the nutritional status of infants.
In addition, supplementary feeding programmes including the Integrated Child Development Scheme, Special Nutrition Programme, Balwadi nutrition programme are being implemented to improve the nutritional status of the population, including children.
