Question : Culling of Wild Animals

(a) whether the Government has taken a decision to allow some States to cull certain wild animals;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) whether this decision has caused conflict rather than cohabitation in man- animal relationship;
(d) if so, the reaction of the Government thereto; and
(e) the steps taken by the Government to ensure that this decision is not misused widely in the country?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a), (b), (c), (d) and (e) OF THE LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO.*22 REGARDING “CULLING OF WILD ANIMALS” BY SHRI D. K. SURESH DUE FOR REPLY ON 19.07.2016:


(a) & (b) In response to the request from the State Governments to include problematic wild animals in Schedule V in accordance with section 62 of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, the Ministry has issued notifications classifying certain species in Schedule V for limited period in specific areas, as per the details below:

(c) and (d) No such information is available in the Ministry. The step has been taken for dealing with over population of these species in identified areas out side forest for a limited period only.

(e) The State Governments are empowered to implement the provisions of the Act in letter and spirit. Adequate measures to ensure compliance of the notifications vests with the respective State Governments. The notifications do not prohibit enforcement of any other law related to welfare of animals.
