Question : NOTARY PUBLIC



(a) whether there is a shortage of Public Notaries in the country and if so, the total number of Public Notaries working in the country as on date, State-wise.

(b) whether some State Governments have requested the Union Government to increase the number of Public Notaries.

(c) if so, the details thereof,

(d) the action taken thereon by the Union Government, and

(e) the other steps taken/being taken by the Government in this regard ?

MINISTER OF LAW & JUSTICE (SHRI D.V. SADANANDA GOWDA)

(a) Rule 8(4A) provides that the appropriate Government may on and after the 9th day of May, 2001, appoint Notaries in a State or a Union Territory, as the case may be, not exceeding the number of Notaries specified in the Schedule. Copy of the Schedule is enclosed as Annexure ‘A’. Further, the total number of Public Notaries appointed in the country as on date by the Central Government, State-wise is enclosed as Annexure-‘B’. In the light of these two Annexures, it is stated that there is no shortage of Public Notaries in the country.

(b) & (c) Request has been received for increasing number of Public Notaries from the following States:-

 1. Tamil Nadu	1088 to 2500 

2. Goa 350 to 450

3. Madhya Pradesh 1688 to 2649

4. West Bengal 450 to 1000

5. Bihar 925 to 1925

(d) & (e) the request received from State Governments is under consideration.
