Question : New Metro Rail Projects

(a) whether the Government is planning to sanction new metro rail projects in the State of Telangana or extending of the existing projects;

(b) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor; and

(c) whether the Government is planning to reduce or ensure no further increase in the fare of metro rail and if so, the details thereof?

Answer given by the minister

(a) to (b): No, Sir. Urban Transport is an integral part of urban development, which is a State subject. Planning and development of Urban Transport system including Metro Rail is done by respective State Government/ Union Territories. Government of India considers financial assistance to these projects as per extant policy subject to feasibility of the project and availability of the resources, as and when posed by respective State Governments/ Union Territories. Government of Telangana has not submitted proposal for either new metro rail or extension of existing projects in the State of Telangana.

(c): No, Sir. As per Sections 33 and 34 of the Metro Railway (Operation & Maintenance) Act, 2002, fare of Metro Rail is fixed by Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) headed by either a sitting Judge or a retired Judge of a Hon’ble High Court. The fixation of fares is not done by the Government.
