Question : PROMOTION OF DISABILITY STUDIES



(a) whether the Government is planning to introduce and promote disability studies at the university level across the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) to (c) While the Universities, which are established by an Act of Parliament or State legislature, have academic autonomy to introduce courses under the relevant statutes/rules and with the approval of statutory bodies, the Government has advised University Grants Commission (UGC) to extend support to Central Universities and at least one State university in each State to have a Department of Disabilities Studies, which should address all issues relating to persons with disabilities–specially human rights, rehabilitation, education etc.
