Question : PRESERVATION OF INDIGENOUS BREED OF COWS



(a) whether the Government proposes to increase the milk production by developing and preserving the indigenous breed of cows;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the facilities/assistance being provided by the Government to cow rearers to improve the indigenous breed of cows;

(d) whether the Government intend to set up two national centres which will be dedicated to developing new breeds of desi cows;

(e) if so, the details thereof;

(f) whether the Government has proposal to start a centre in Tamil Nadu; and

(g) if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (b) In order to compliment and supplement the efforts made by the States the Department of Animal Husbandry Dairying & Fisheries is implementing following schemes to increase the milk production by development and conservation of indigenous breeds of cows:
(i) National programme for Bovine Breeding and Dairy Development (NPBBDD)
(ii) National Dairy Plan-I
(iii) Central Cattle Breeding Farms
(iv) Central Herd Registration Scheme
(c) Following facilities/ assistance are being provided by the Department of Animal Husbandry Dairying & Fisheries to cow rearers to improve the indigenous breed of cows:
# Providing quality Artificial Insemination(AI) services to indigenous animals
# Supplying bulls of high genetic merit for natural service in the areas which are not covered through AI
# Performance and recording of indigenous animals in order to identify elite animals for bull production
# Organising fertility camps
# Awarding farmers keeping elite indigenous animals
# Formation of breeders associations
# Farmers Training and awareness camps
# Other extension activities

(d) & (e) Government has proposed to establish two National Kamdhenu Breeding Centres (NKBC) one in north and one in south in order to undertake development and conservation of indigenous breeds in a focused and scientific manner.

(f) & (g) No proposal has been received from State Government of Tamil Nadu.
