Question : PER CAPITA CONSUMPTION OF WATER



(a) whether per-capita consumption of water in the country has been projected at 91.6 litres on an average;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether per-capita consumption of water at international level is comparatively higher than India;

(d) if so, the details thereof;

(e) the quantum of water country receives from rains and rivers as compared to international level; and

(f) the quantum of water utilised out of the total available quantity of water?

(a) & (b) As per the norms followed by Ministry of Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation and Ministry of Rural Development, the per-capita consumption of water in India is as under :

(c) & (d) As per the information contained in the report of Water and Sanitation Programme (WSP-SA) the per-capita consumption in various cities in different countries of the world varies considerably from 80 lpcd to 424 lpcd.

(e) & (f) The average annual precipitation for the country is 4000 Billion Cubic Metre (BCM) and the average annual water availability of the country is assessed at 1869 BCM. Out of which owing to topographical, hydrological and other constraints, the utilizable flow is of the order of 1122 BCM which includes 432 BCM of replenishable ground water.
