Question : NATIONAL BOOK TRUST



(a) the number of books published by the National Book Trust and the expenditure incurred thereon during 1998 and 1999;

(b) the number of out of these books on agriculture science and social forestry published and distributed by the Trust;

(c) whether the trust propose to encourage the budding writers and writings on research books;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) if not the reasons therefore?

(a) Duriang the financial year 1998-99, a total of 807 books were published in 19 languages. These include original translations and reprints. The total expenditure incurred on publication of these books was Rs. 302.10 lakh.

(b) Out of these, five titles in various languages were on agriculture science and social forestry.

(c) The Trust does not have any special scheme for encouraging budding

(d) Writers. All books of information nature are written by experts in the field for the benefit of general readers. Literary works of eminent authors of a particular

(e) Indian language (already published and recognized as an important work in that language) and recommended by the language advisory panel are translated into other languages of the country. Sometimes, new translators are provided the opportunity to translate such books. In the case of children’s books and books for neo-literate, new writers and illustrators are encouraged and published. Final decision is based on the merit of the work.


(ii) The trust does not bring out research books on individual subjects. However, university level text books and reference books are considered for financial assistance under the Subsidy Scheme of the Trust.
