THE MINISTER OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS (SHRI JASWANT SINGH)
(a) & (b) The UN Millennium Declaration, adopted at the conclusion of the
Millennium Summit of the Heads of State and Government, held
in New York, from September 6 to 8, recognised that the central
challenge is to ensure that globalisation becomes a positive force
for all the world`s people. The Declaration states that while
globalisation offers great opportunities, its benefits, as at present,
are very unevenly shared, and its costs unevenly distributed. It also
recognises that developing countries and countries with economies
in transition face special difficulties in responding to the central
challenge of globalisation. Only through broad and sustained
efforts to create a shared future, for all humanity in all its
diversity, can globalisation be made fully inclusive and equitable.
These efforts must include policies and measures at the global
level, which correspond to the needs of developing countries and
economies in transition, and are formulated and implemented with
their effective participation.
(c) India will work in close cooperation with other developing
countries in dealing with the challenge of globalisation and its
impact on the developing countries.
