(a) the amount of rebate granted by Railways for transportation of imported coal during 1998-99 and 1999-2000 so far;

(b) whether the Government have a proposal to withdraw the rebate;

(c) if so, the date from which the rebate is likely to be withdrawn;

(d) whether the Government have made any assessment of impact on domestic market; and

(e) if so, the details thereof ?

Statement referred to in reply to parts (a) to (e) of Starred Question No.210 by SHRI S.D.N.R.WADIYAR for answer in LOK SABHA on 9.3.2000 regarding REBATE ON TRANSPORT OF COAL

(a) Rebate of Rs.34.30 Lakh and Rs.129.55 Lakh on Southern Railway and Rs.92 Lakh and Rs.341 Lakh on Western Railway was granted on Imported Coal traffic during 1998-99 and 1999-2000 respectively.

(b)& (c) Yes, Sir. Ministry of Railways have already issued instruction to withdraw this concession w.e.f. 1.4.2000.

(d)&(e) Strategy was directed towards attracting additional traffic to the rail mode.
