Question : UN SUMMIT



(a) whether the issue of nuclear weapons is likely to be included in the agenda of UN Summit slated for September, 2000;

(b) if so, whether India has strongly supported this item of the agenda;

(c) if so, the details thereof; and

(d) the other items proposed by India to be included in the agenda?

(a), (b), (c) The 55th Session of the UN General Assembly scheduled to begin on September 5, 2000 has been designated as `Millenium Assembly of the United Nations.` A `Millenium Summit` will be held from September 6 - 8, 2000 under the overall theme of the ` The role of the united Nations in the twenty-first century.` There is no specific item on nuclear weapons on the agenda of the Summit. India strongly supports the UN`s efforts for global nuclear disarmament.

(d) No items have been proposed for inclusion on the agenda of the summit.
