(a) & (b) : Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are statutory autonomous bodies governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, which declares them as the ‘Institutions of National Importance.’ To develop the IITs into world class institutions, a number of steps have been taken, including periodical external peer review to assess strengths and weaknesses of the individual IITs and suggest remedial measures, annual performance review of Directors to ensure efficiency of administration and excellence in academics, lowering of annual salary ceiling for VISA from US$ 25000/- to US$ 14000/- to attract best foreign faculty, implementation of Global Initiative of Academic Network (GIAN) to provide international exposure by inviting best faculty from premier educational institutions across the world to teach in India during summer/winter breaks; and setting up of Research Parks to strengthen industry-academia collaboration. The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), on the other hand, are autonomous Institutions registered under the Societies Act. They are known world over for imparting quality education in various branches of management.
