Question : Type-II Polio Virus

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) whether type-II polio virus infection has been found in the injections used for immunization in various States of the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof, State/UT-wise;

(c) whether the Government has ordered probe in this regard and if so, the details thereof;

(d) whether the Government proposes for additional immunization in these States; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a) & (b): Yes, few batches of bivalent Oral Polio Vaccine (bOPV) supplied by M/s BioMed Pvt. Ltd were found to be containing Type 2 Polio vaccine virus at Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL) Kasauli and Enterovirus Research Centre (ERC) Mumbai.This vaccine was issued to Uttar Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. In Tamil Nadu vaccine was not issued to any districts or used.

(c): Yes, following actions have been taken by Government:(i)Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has issued show cause notice and stop production order to the manufacturer and a police complaint has been filed.(ii)Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has issued instructions to all States/UTs to stop use of this bOPV supplied by M/s BioMed Pvt. Ltd.
(d) & (e): Yes, Government has carried out special vaccination campaigns with Inactivated Polio Vaccine (fIPV) in the identified districts of Uttar Pradesh and Telangana where these batches of bOPV were suspected to have been used. This special round has boosted immunity against Type 2 Polio Virus.As per the latest surveillance data, there is no type 2 polio vaccine virus in any of the sample.
