Question : Indiscriminate use of Antibiotics in Poultry

(a) Whether it is a fact that indiscriminate use of antibiotics in the Indian poultry industry is endangering the health of people consuming the poultry products, if so, the details thereof:
(b) whether it is also a fact that birds bred for meat are kept in inhumanely small cages , fed medicine to make them grow rapidly and lack clean water and sanitation facilities leading these birds to become disease-ridden; and
(c) if so, the steps being taken by the Government to combat the same?

(a) and (c) There is no information with the Department on indiscriminate use of antibiotics in Indian poultry industry and the human health hazards associated with it. However, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying has issued advisories to all States and UTs for judicious use of antibiotics in the treatment of food producing animals, but to refrain from using antibiotics in animal feed.
(b) The Department has not received any information in this regard.
