(a) While information on students enrolled in different
levels in various educational institutions in the country
based on religion are not maintained centrally, the Prime
Minister`s High Powered Committee on the Social, Economic
and Educational Conditions of Muslims in India (Sachar
Committee) has estimated based don a sample survey that only
one in twenty five students enrolled at the undergraduate
level is a Muslim and at the postgraduate level, the number
is only one in fifty enrolled students. Using the NSSO data
of estimates for currently enrolled children (61st round
2004-05), the Sachar Committee has estimated that 81.8% of
Muslim children ages between 6-14 years were enrolled in
schools during 2004-05. Using the NCERT data of Seventh All
India School Survey (2002), the Committee has estimated the
number of Madarsa students at 10.36 lakh students enrolled
in Madarsas pursing Primary, Middle, Secondary and Higher
Secondary Education.
