Question : REGISTRATION OF PRODUCTS

(a) the details of number of applications received and products registered under the provisions of Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 so far, list, area and State/UT-wise;

(b) whether a number of applications for product registration are lying pending before the Board of Registration;

(c) if so, the details thereof along with the reasons therefor, area and State/ UTwise; and

(d) the steps taken by the Government for their speedy clearance?

(a): As on 15-12-2014 the Geographical Indication (GI) Registry, Chennai had received 503 applications and 215 number of products were registered as GI under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. Details are placed on the website of Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks www.ipindia.nic.in.

(b): Yes, Madam.

(c) & (d): A total of 265 applications are pending as on 15th December, 2014 at different stages of proceedings due to various reasons / actions pending with the applicants. The delay and pendency is due to the non-compliance of the necessary legal requirements by the applicants as mentioned in the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 and Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Rules, 2002. The details along with the reasons therefor are placed on the website of Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks www.ipindia.nic.in. Whenever the applicants have complied with the requirement stipulated in the GI Act and Rules, GI Registrations have been granted within the time frame of one year.
