Question : State Reorganization Act, 1956

(a) the role assigned to the Regional Councils constituted under the State Reorganization Act, 1956;

(b) whether the Union and State Governments use the Regional Councils to resolve issues related to any region;

(c) if so, the details thereof along with the number of meetings of the Regional Councils held during the last three years; and

(d) the details of the outcome of these meetings?

(a) to (d): Five Zonal Councils, viz., Northern Zonal Council, Central Zonal Council, Eastern Zonal Council, Western Zonal Council and Southern Zonal Council have been set up under the States Reorganization Act, 1956.
Under sub-section (1) of the section 21 of the Act, each Zonal Council shall be an advisory body and may discuss any matter in which some or all of the States represented in that Council, or the Union and one or more of the States represented in that Council, have a common interest and advise the Central Government and the Government of each State concerned as to the action to be taken on any such matter.

The Zonal Councils during their meetings deliberate upon wide ranging issues that come for consideration before them.
Since the year 2019 till date, five meetings of various Zonal Councils have been held. In these meetings, the agenda items were deliberated upon in detail and appropriate decisions were taken with the aim of resolving the issues in a spirit of consensus and in an amicable manner.
