Question : PRODUCTION OF SEA CREATURES



(a) whether a large number of sea creatures such as `Coral-Mengruz` died as a result of leakage of crude oil pipe line of Indian Oil Corporation;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the losses suffered thereby;

(c) the persons found responsible in this regard and action taken against them so far; and

(d) the measures taken or proposed to be taken to avoid such incidents and save the environment and sea creatures in future?

(a)&(b) No, Sir. Two dolphins and one sea turtle are reported to have died due to oil spillage.

(c) Two officials of the Under Water Services, the contractor engaged by the Indian Oil Corporation were arrested and a case filed in appropriate Court of Law.

(d) The Coast Guards have been requested by the Government of Gujarat to prepare a plan for oil spill management and submit by 31-3-2000.
