Question : Six-laning of National Highways


(a) whether the Government has undertaken the projects of six-laning of existing Salem to Coimbatore National Highway (NH-544) including a ring road for the city of Coimbatore under the Bharatmala Pariyojana;

(b) if so, the details and the present status thereof along with the funds allocated and utilized for the purpose;

(c) the time by which the said work is likely to be completed; and

(d) the other steps taken by the Government to complete the ongoing National Highway projects in Tamil Nadu in a time bound manner?

(a) to (d) Yes Sir. Salem-Cochin stretch via Coimbatore is a part of North South Corridor classified as National Corridor under Bharatmala Pariyojana. The stretch from Coimbatore to Chengapalli is already six-lane and from Chengapalli to Salem is four-lane at present. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for capacity augmentation for Chengapalli to Salem (103 Km) and for Coimbatore half ring road (81.80 Km) has been initiated. Development of road stretches is taken up depending upon the outcome of DPR, project viability and availability of funds. In order to expedite the completion of ongoing National Highways, coordination meetings are held with senior level officials of Government of Tamil Nadu.
