(a) whether the Government proposes to develop a number of rivers for inland waterways and if so, the details thereof, State-wise;

(b) the details of proposals of waterways received/ approved by the Government and the status thereof including goods etc. proposed to be transported, State-wise;

(c) the total expenditure likely to be incurred on these waterways including funds allocated along with the agencies likely to be engaged for the purpose; and

(d) the steps taken/ being taken by the Government to expedite development of these waterways in a time-bound manner?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) to (d) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 423 RAISED BY SHRI RAJESH VERMA & SHRI MOHAMMED FAIZAL, M.Ps REGARDING “DEVELOPMENT OF RIVERS FOR INLAND WATERWAYS”.

(a)to(d):Yes, Madam. A Bill for declaration of 101 waterways as National Waterways has recently been approved by the Govern- ment for placing it before the Parliament. The proposal for the waterways included in the proposed legislation is based on information gathered from the State Governments, topo sheets, surveys and reports etc. The list of waterways (state- wise) is enclosed as ‘Annexure - 1’.

The development of the National Waterways is done after pre-feasibility and techno - economic feasibility studies which inter-alia, covers the potential of navigability, cargo availability etc. The estimates of the cost of development and the time schedule of imple- mentation are based on the feasibility studies and Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the individual National Waterways.
