Question : MOU Between India and Myanmar

Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state:

(a) whether India and Myanmar have recently signed MoU for cooperation in various fields;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the salient features thereof; and

(c) the manner in which the agreements will be beneficial for India?

(a) to (c) Yes. India and Myanmar signed seven MoUs to facilitate bilateral cooperation in various fields during the visit of the Myanmar President to India on August 27-30, 2016 and the visit of the Myanmar State Counsellor on October 17-19, 2016. These included two MoUs on practical cooperation on the bridges and road segment of the Trilateral Highway Project, that are being upgraded with India’s assistance. Also, MoUs on Renewable Energy and on Power establish a framework for future engagement, including in the areas of power generation, transmission, trading, exchange of scientific and technical personnel and information and data, etc. An MoU on Cooperation in the field of Traditional Systems of Medicine promotes traditional medicine research, exchange of experts, supply of medicines and documents, etc. On the finance side, MoUs between Financial Regulatory Department of Myanmar and Insurance Institute of India and between Reserve Bank of India and Central Bank of Myanmar establish arrangements for sharing of academic and professional knowledge in insurance as well as banking supervisory information and cooperation.
