Question : IDENTIFICATION OF UNVIABLE PROJECTS



(a) whether the Railways have identified unviable projects and decided to be given up;

(b) if so, the details of such projects;

(c) the amount spent on the such projects till date;

(d) whether the Railways have undertaken the steps to downsizing the employees’ strength as proposed by Fifth Pay Commission; and

(e) if so, the details thereof alongwith the outcome thereof?

(b) & (c) : Do not arise.


(d) : The Railways have a system whereby continuous review of staff strength takes place so as to ensure right-sizing. The Fifth Central Pay Commission had also made certain recommendations in regard to down-sizing of the government workforce by 30%. This recommendation was, however not accepted by the Government.
