(a) whether adequate medical facilities are not available for treatment of cataract in various States especially in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh;

(b) if so, the reasons therefor; and

(c) the specific steps being taken by the Governement in this direction?

(a)to(c) Medical facilitres are available in most parts of the Country for treatment of Cataract. Under the National Programme for Control of Blindness, 11 Regional Institutes of Opthalmology, 82 Medical Colleges, 445 District Hospitals, 421 Mobile Eye Units and 5633 Primary Health Centres have been upgraded to provide eye care in general and treatment of Cataract in particular. 520 Distrct Blindness Control Societies have been established for implementing eye care programme. Under the National Programme for Control of Blindness, eye surgeons are being trained and Equipments supplied for IOL Surgery. The facilities available in the States of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh are at Annexure I.
