Question : SECURITY IN TIGER RESERVES



(a) whether the Tiger Reserves in the country including Odisha and naxalite States are endangered due to lack of adequate security;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the steps taken/being taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) & (b) Some tiger reserves are affected due to left wing extremism viz. Nagarjunasagar Srisailam (Andhra Pradesh), Similipal (Odisha), Indravati, Udanti-Sitanadi (Chhattisgarh) and Palamau (Jharkhand).

(c) Central assistance under the ongoing Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Project Tiger has been provided to the above tiger reserves which interalia include deployment of local workforce for protection, besides works in the peripheral area to benefit local people in Nagarjunasagar Srisailam

(Andhra Pradesh), Similipal (Odisha) and Palamau (Jharkhand). In the Nagarjunasagar Srisailam, the ‘Chenchus’ are involved in protection. The Similipal Tiger Reserve has been provided 100% central assistance for raising, arming and deploying the Special Tiger Protection Force. The tiger reserves have also been assessed by independent teams for an evaluation of management effectiveness.
