Question : COASTAL HIGHWAYS



(a) the total length of the coastline of India and the length of this coastline being serviced by the National Highways (NHs),State-wise;

(b) the length of the coastal roads which have not been notified as yet and upgraded as NHs, State-wise including Gujarat;

(c) whether the Union Government proposes to notify and upgrade such roads;

(d) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor; and

(e) the time by which these roads are likely to be upgraded?

A STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) to (e) OF THE LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 171 TO BE ANSWERED ON 26TH MARCH, 2012 ASKED BY SHRI HARIN PATHAK AND SHRI RAMSINH RATHWA REGARDING COASTAL HIGHWAYS.

(a): The total coastline of India is 7,516 km. Out of which the Peninsular India contributes 5,423 kms. while the remaining 2,093 kms. are contributed by the Island groups of India. The details of the approximate length of National Highways (NHs) along the coastline State/Union Territory-wise are as under:

(b) to (e): Expansion of National Highway network is a continuous process. Declaration of any road as a National Highway depends on several other considerations including traffic needs, inter-se-priority, requirement of connectivity on all India basis and availability of funds.
