Question : IMPLEMENTATION OF CRZ GUIDELINES



(a) the salient features of Coastal Regulation Zone Notification;

(b) whether the Union Government has been facing several problems in enforcing the Coastal Regulation zone guidelines since their notification in February, 1991;

(c) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;

(d) whether following the Tsunami disaster some coastal States have requested the Union Government for strengthening of the Coastal Regulation zone notification;

(e) if so, the details and action taken in this regard; and

(f) the steps taken by the Union Government for strict implementation of said guidelines?

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTS (SHRI NAMO NARAIN MEENA):

(a) For the purpose of protecting and conserving coastal environment, the Government had issued the Coastal Regulation Zone Notification, 1991 under Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. The notification regulates all developmental activities within the Coastal Regulation Zone area.

(f) After the tsunami episode, the Minister for Environment and Forests has requested all the Chief Ministers of the coastal States and Administrators of Union Territories to take steps for stricter enforcement of the Coastal Regulation Zone Notification, 1991.
