Question : Encroachment of Land at Airports

(a) whether more than 510 acres of airport land under Airports Authority of India is under illegal occupation in the country;
(b) if so, the details thereof, airport wise;
(c) the reasons behind illegal occupation of the said land and the reasons for not taking action against the guilty persons so far; and
(d) the reaction of the Government thereto?

(a): Yes, Madam.;

(b): Out of the overall land belonging to Airports Authority of India (AAI) in the country, about 1.4%, which is approximately, 798.477 acres of land area is under illegal occupation. The details of encroachment of land at various airports in the country are at Annexure.;

(c) & (d): Majority of the land area under encroachment, i.e. approx. 359 acres is around Mumbai and Juhu Airports which is inhabited by slum dwellers. Further, around 127 acres of land area at Bhopal Airport and 119.82 acres of land area at Hyderabad Airport is also under encroachment . M/s Mumbai International Airport Ltd. (MIAL) has entered into a State Government Support Agreement (SGSA) with the Govt. of Maharashtra, in order to remove the encroachment from airport land in co-ordination with Airports Authority of India (AAI). In case of Bhopal AIrport, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh has agreed to exchange 96 acres of land with AAI and provide an alternate site for the remaining land area. In case of Hyderabad Airport, the land matters are sub-judice. The process of rehabilitation of illegal occupants is a subject matter of the concerned State Govt. and the role of AAI and other private airport operators is limited to assistance and persuasion. Nonetheless, AAI has undertaken all efforts to co-ordinate with the concerned State Governments to remove such encroachments.
