(a): the gauge conversion target achieved by the Railways during the Eleventh Five Year Plan so far;

(b): whether proposals have been received by the Railways from the State Governments for gauge conversion of railway lines in their States; and

(c): if so, the details thereof and the action taken by the Railways thereon?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (c) OF STARRED QUESTION NO.182 BY SHRI HARIN PATHAK TO BE ANSWERED IN LOK SABHA ON 16-07-2009 REGARDING GAUGE CONVERSION.

(a): Gauge Conversion of 2112 km of Meter Gauge/Narrow Gauge lines to Broad Gauge has been completed during the first two years of the 11th plan period.

(b) & (c): As per the records, the details of the proposals received from the State Governments for taking up new gauge conversion projects in the recent past and action taken thereon is as under:

Gujarat Ahmedabad-Botad-Bhavnagar Proposal for Ahmedabad-Botad and Dhasa- and Dhasa-JetalsarJetalsar conversion was processed for “in principle” approval of Planning Commission, who desired that the gauge conversion of the section may be deferred for the present as the projected traffic do not justify immediate conversion. Botad-Bhavnagar is already a broad gauge line.

Viramgam-Samakhiali It is already on broad gauge.

Navlakhi-Maliya-Rajkot It is already on broad gauge.

Mahesana -Viramgam It is already on broad gauge.

Viramgam-Surendranagar It is already on broad gauge.

Samakhiali –Gandhidham-Kandla It is already on broad gauge. The doubling of Gandhidham-Kandla port by gauge conversion of meter gauge line to broad gauge has been included in Budget 2009-10.

Gandhidham-Anjar-Mundra It is already on Broad Gauge.

Bhavnagar-Adhelal-Dholera- There is no such railway line Vataman-Petlad

Dholera-Bhimnath There is no such railway line

Khambhat to Port There is no such railway line

Ahmedabad- Mahesana- Survey for gauge conversion of Mahesana-Taranga Taranga-Ambaji hill with extension to Ambaji has been completed and proposal could not be considered due to its un-remunerative nature.

Bhavnagar-Mahua It is already on broad gauge.

Wankaner-Bhuj-Naliya A broad gauge line already exists from Wankaner to Bhuj. The conversion of Bhuj-Naliya has been taken up.

Narrow gauge lines under Gauge conversion of Bharuch-Samni-Dahej, jurisdiction of Vadodra Pratapnagar-Chota Udepur, Ankleshwar- Division Rajpipla has been taken up.

Ahmedabad-Khed Brahma- The work of Ahmedabad-Himmatnagar has already Ambaji been taken up as part of Ahmedabad-Udaipur conversion. The survey for Himmatnagar-Khed Brahma with extension to Abu Road has been taken up.

Himachal Pathankot-Jogindernagar Updating survey has been taken up. Pradesh

Maharashtra Achalpur-Murtazapur-Yavatmal Survey completed in October 2008. This is a and Pulgaon-Arvi private line owned by Central Provinces Railway Company Limited but maintained and operated by Central Railway. Due to unremunerative line and also because it is privately owned, the proposal for gauge conversion is not being considered.

Nagpur-Nagbir Survey included in budget 2009-2010.

Pachora-Jamner Survey was done in 2000-01 and project was not taken up.
