Question : Revamping of Water Resources

(a) the status of conventional water resources in the rural areas of the country especially Uttar Pradesh at present due to current drought situation there; and
(b) the details of extinct water resources which has now been revamped so far?

(a) As per the 4th Minor Irrigation (MI) Census (2006-07), 5,23,816 tanks, ponds and storages in India were used for Minor Irrigation Schemes under surface flow and surface lift. Out of these, 80,128 water bodies were not in use causing a loss of 1.95 million hectare irrigation potential due to under-utilization/ non-utilization. Out of 6879 total water bodies in U.P., 488 were not in use.
(b) Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation launched a pilot scheme for “Repair, Renovation and Restoration (RRR) of Water Bodies directly linked to Agriculture” in January 2005 for implementation during the remaining period of Xth Plan.
Further, the Ministry of Water Resources launched a State Sector Scheme for Repair, Renovation & Restoration (RRR) of water bodies for implementation during XI Plan. The scheme of RRR of Water Bodies has been continued in XII Plan also.
Since X Plan, under RRR of Water Bodies scheme, total 11865 water bodies from different States including Uttar Pradesh have been completed. The State-wise details of the water bodies completed is at Annexure-I.
