(a) whether the Government have fixed a target to bring down the distribution and
transmission losses of electricity in the country to an average of 15 per cent at the
national level;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) the time by which the Government have decided to achieve the said target;
(d) the percentage of such losses in developed and developing countries of the world;
and
(e) the time by which the target is likely to be achieved?

(a) to (e) : Central Electricity Authority have issued guidelines to States for reduction
of transmission & distribution losses to between 10-15%. 20 States have signed
Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with the Ministry of Power for reform of their
power sectors. The rele3ase of assistance under the Accelerated Power Development
Programme (APDP) to the States would be linked to achievement of reform milestones.
Reduction of transmission & distribution losses through metering, energy audit, control
of theft etc. is one of the important milestones included in the MOUs.
A Statement indicating the transmission 7 distribution losses in developed
and developing countries of the world is enclosed at Annexure-I & II respectively.
