Question : Polythene Free Zone

(a) the number of historical monuments/temples and other sites protected by the Archaeological Survey of India in the country particularly in Maharashtra;

(b) the details of the revenue earned from the sale of tickets;

(c) whether the Government proposes to declare all the historical monuments and heritage sites as polythene free area and if so, the details thereof; and

(d) whether the Government is considering to mark the peripheral area within the range of 500 metres as ‘Polythene Free Zone’ and if so, the details thereof?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PART (a) TO (d) OF THE LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO.214 FOR 31.7.2017

(a) There are 3686 monuments/sites including temples which have been declared as protected monuments/sites in the country with 285 monuments/sites in Maharashtra.

(b) The revenue earned from sale of entry tickets at the centrally protected ticketed monuments under Archaeological Survey of India during the year 2016-17 is Rs.221.30 crores.

(c) The Ministry of Culture has recommended prohibition on use of polythene. ASI has declared all ASI protected Monuments and Archaeological Sites as ‘Polythene Free Zone’.

(d) No such proposal is under consideration.
