Question : SUPER CYCLONE IN ORISSA



(a) whether a super cyclone in 1999 swept across 14 more prosperous districts of Orissa where turbulent storm killed over 10,000 people and 3 lakh cattle besides damaging crop of 21 lakh hectare and falling about 9 crore trees;

(b) whether the Union Government and the Government of Orissa did not add a single cyclone shelter to 23 that existed before the sea storm and post disaster coordination work; and

(c) if so, the reasons therefor?

(a): As reported by the Government of Orissa, two cyclones of October, 1999, including the Super cyclone, affected 14 districts, resulting in loss of about 10,000 human lives, affecting cropped area in about 22 lakh ha. and damage to about 22 lakh houses.

(b)&(c): In addition to 23 shelters completed a little before the cyclones of October, 1999, 24 such additional shelters are nearing completion.
