Question : Role of National Monuments Authority

(a) the effective role of National Monuments Authority in the safety, security and maintenance of ancient historical and protected monuments in the country;

(b) the details thereof in respect of such monuments, State –wise; and

(c) the details of the measures taken for protection and maintenance of such monuments in Uttar Pradesh?

(a) The roles of National Monuments Authority (NMA) as mandated by Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act (AMASR), 1958 and Rules framed there under inter-alia include: making recommendations to the Central Government for grading, categorization and classification of Centrally Protected Monuments (CPM) and protected areas; conducting impact assessment of large scale development projects proposed in the regulated areas; preparation of Heritage Bye Laws (HBL) for each CPM and protected area; regulation of construction activities in the regulated area of CPM and protected area while ensuring that they do not have any substantial adverse impact on the preservation, safety, security or access to the monuments or its immediate surroundings.

(b) The state–wise abstract of 3693 Centrally Protected Monuments is annexed as Annexure.

(c) The Archaeological Survey of India looks after protection, conservation, preservation and maintenance of Centrally Protected Monuments/sites in the country including Uttar Pradesh regularly, within the available resources, as per the requirements of different sites.
