Question : Seaweed Cultivation in Tamil Nadu

(a) whether seaweed park for seaweed cultivation is proposed in coastal States,
especially in Tamil Nadu;
(b) if so, the details thereof; and
(c) the number of fishermen/fisherwomen empowered under Pradhan Mantri Matsya
Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and the amount spent in the country, State-wise, during the
last three years?

a) & b) Yes, Sir. A Multipurpose Seaweed Park has been proposed in Tamil Nadu to promote the seaweed cultivation under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The Government of Tamil Nadu has submitted a project proposal. The State Government has been asked to submit a Detailed Project Report with firmed up cost estimates.
c) Implementation of the PMMSY has commenced during middle of 2020-21 and cumulative number of beneficiaries supported under PMMSYso far is 9,42,761. Department of Fisheries, Government of India has accorded approval of project proposals to the tune of Rs. 5336.96 crores with a central share of Rs. 1823.50 crores to States/Union Territories and other implementing agencies for which an amount of Rs. 1223.96 crore has been released during 2020-21 and 2021-22 (till date). State-wise cumulative details of the cost of approved proposals and amount released under PMMSY during 2020-21 and 2021-22 (till date) is furnished at Annexure.
