Question : Installation of Security Check Equipments at Stations

(a) whether the Railways has decided to install security check equipments such as metal detectors, CCTV cameras and other luggage checking equipments at all the railway stations of tier-II and tier-III category across the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the time by which these equipments are likely to be installed; and

(c) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) to (c): Based on the threat perception and vulnerability, security gadgets like baggage scanners, hand held metal detectors, door frame metal detectors, Close Circuit Television (CCTV) camera, bomb detection equipment, dog squads, etc. have been provided at identified railway stations to strengthen security of passengers. At present, 436 railway stations have been provided with CCTV cameras for round the clock surveillance. Installation of CCTV cameras been further envisaged at all stations and passenger carrying coaches, progressively, except halt stations and General Coaches, subject to availability of funds.

Important measures initiated by Railways to ensure security of passengers and to supplement efforts of States, include escorting of trains, access control, operationalisation and upgradation of Security Help Line number 182, prosecution of offenders under relevant provisions of the Railways Act, 1989, security of women passengers, rescue of children, constitution of State Level Security Committee for Railways (SLSCR), etc.

Strengthening and upgradation of security infrastructure is an ongoing process. Accordingly, more stations will be provided with security equipment like baggage scanners, CCTV cameras, bomb detection gadgets, etc. in due course.
