Question : MAHESHWAR HYDRO POWER PROJECT



(a) the reasons for the suspension of work on the ongoing Maheshwar Hydel Power Project on Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh;

(b) whether any proposal to revive project by National Hydroelectric Power Corporation is pending before the Union Government;

(c) if so, the details thereof; and

(d) the action taken by Government thereon?

(a) : In exercise of power under Section-5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) vide letter dated 23.4.2010, directed the project proponent M/s Maheshwar Hydro Power Project to get the on- going construction works at the site suspended with immediate effect for non- fulfillment of Terms and Conditions of specific identified environmental issues, till the compliance report is found implementable by the Government. However, to avoid possible damage to the safety of the structures, MoEF vide letter dated 10.05.2010, amended their orders dated 23.04.2010 to the extent that only seven gates, which are yet to be made functional and are under installation may be completed, as planned before the onset of monsoons.

(b) : There is no proposal to get this project started through NHPC.

(c) & (d) : Do not arise.
