Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF TRIBAL AFFAIRS (SHRI P.R. KYNDIAH)

(a) At present there are 16 Tribal Research Institutes (TRIs) located one each in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karanataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

(b) to (e) The Ministry of Tribal Affairs had received one proposal from the A & N Administration to set up TRI at Port Blair in the year 2002-03. The proposal was cleared by the Ministry and a sum of Rs. 29.50 lakh was released for the purpose. The TRI at Port Blair has however, not yet started.

The Ministry received similar proposals from the States of Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Karanataka and Jammu & Kashmir during 2004-05. The proposals received from Chhattisgarh and Karanataka had been cleared by the Ministry. The funds to the tune of Rs. 5.00 lakh and Rs. 2.00 lakh were released to the states of Chhattisgarh and Karanataka respectively during the 2004-05.

The proposals received from the state of Himachal Pradesh was incomplete and that from Jammu & Kashmir was from an NGO, which is not permissible. The State Governments have been informed accordingly.
