(a) to (c): India, being a tropical country, six vector borne diseases i.e. Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, Japanese Encephalitis, Kala-Azar and Lymphatic Filariasis are reported from various parts of the country.
The details of cases and deaths in respect of Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, Japanese Encephalitis, Kala-azar and Lymphatic Filariasis are furnished at Annexure-I to VI.
Reasons for the occurrence of these diseases are as under:
• Geographical eco-types & terrain features exposing communities to various pathogen.
• Inadequate/Poor solid waste management practices, unplanned urbanization.,
• Climatic conditions i.e. temperature, humidity & rainfall allowing pathogens to proliferate.
• Poor housing condition.
• Migratory population,
(d): Govt. of India is providing technical, material (kind) & financial support to the States & UTs for disease management, for vector control & capacity building of the State health machinery. Some of the specific supports are as follows:
• Supply of DDT & Synthetic Pyrethroid for indoor residual spray (IRS).
• Vaccination for JE.
• Testing kits & drugs for detection & treatment of Malaria & Kala Azar.
• Testing kits for detection of Dengue &Chikungunya.
• Supply of LLIN (Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets)
• Support for source reduction.
• Annual Mass Drug Administration (DEC & Albendazole) for elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis.
• Strengthening of the District Hospital, Community Health Centres and Primary Health Centers for management of these cases.
(e): Financial & technical assistance are provided to States/UTs for all vector borne diseases.
