Question : SETTING UP OF NEW STEEL PLANTS



(a) the details of steel plants functioning in Uttar Pradesh as on date;

(b) whether the Government has set up any new steel plants in the State during the last three years and the current year;

(c) if so, the details thereof, location-wise;

(d) whether the Government has received any proposal for setting up of new steel plants in the State; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a) As per the survey conducted by Joint Plant Committee, there are 309 steel production units of various types functioning in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The detailed break-up of these are; 2 Electric Arc Furnaces, 131 Inducation Furnaces and 176 Re-rolling mills.

(b)&(c): Government has no proposal to set up any steel unit in Uttar Pradesh. However, Steel Authority of India Limited, a Public Sector, has procured the erstwhile Malvika Steel Company located at Jagdishpur, through auction conducted by Debt Recovery Tribunal.

(d)&(e): Since, steel sector is deregulated, approval of Central Government is not required for setting up of steel unit anywhere in India, except under certain locational restrictions.
