Question : Shortage of Potable Water

(a) whether Fatehpur Sikri is facing acute shortage of potable water as the water available there is contaminated with high levels of fluoride which has also created serious health hazards for the residents of the area;
(b) if so, the plans which have been envisaged by the Government to overcome this problem;
(c) whether the Government is working in unison with international agencies/multi-lateral agencies/State Governments/local bodies for seeking their assistance for obviating this problem and if so, the details thereof; and
(d) whether any timeline has been drawn to resolve this issue and if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor?

Answer given by the minister

(a) to (b) As per information entered by State Government of Uttar Pradesh, all fluoride affected habitations in Fatehpur Sikri have been provided with TTSP (Tank Type stand Post) and Deep Hand pump and seven habitations have also been provided with fluoride removal units (FRU).
(c) to (d)Drinking water supply is a State subject. For improving the coverage of safe drinking water to rural population, this Ministry supplements the efforts of the States by providing them with technical and financial assistance through the centrally sponsored scheme National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP). It is the State Governments who plan, design, approve, execute, operate & maintain the schemes for providing safe drinking water to rural population.
During March 2016, with the recommendation of NITI Aayog, an amount of Rs. 1000Crores was released to various Arsenic & Fluoride affected States/UTs for installation of Community water purification plants. Rs. 13.39 Cr. was provided to Uttar Pradesh State. In addition to this, the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation had launched National Water Quality Sub-Mission (NWQSM) on 22ndMarch 2017 under NRDWP toprovide safe drinking water to 27,544 arsenic / fluoride affected rural habitationsin the country. An amount of Rs. 49.95 Cr. has been released to Uttar Pradesh State so far.
