Question : Eye Testing Centres

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government is aware of the mushrooming of eye testing centres/ shops throughout the country without any valid credentials, if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether there are any mandatory requirements as to the qualifications for opening eye testing centres/shops, if so, the details thereof; and

(c) whether the Government proposes to frame standards for eye testing and regulate such centres/shops and if not, the reasons therefor?

(a): It has come to the notice of the Government that eye testing centres/shops are undertaking eye testing.

(b): There are no specific mandatory requirements for opening an optical shop or eye testing centres as of now. It is, however, desirable that eye testing be done by persons having the minimum qualification of two years diploma course in Optometry or trained as an Ophthalmic Assistant in any of the recognized Government Hospitals.

(c): There is no proposal as of now to regulate such centres/shops.
