Question : CONSERVATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF LAKES



(a) whether there is any proposal to implement a pilot project for the proper development of major lakes in the country.

(b) if so, the details thereof indicating the funds earmarked for the job, lake-wise; and

(c) the steps taken for the proper conservation and development of each of the major lakes during 9th Plan, year-wise?

(a) to (c) A scheme of National Lake Conservation Plan(NLCP) for conservation of 10 urban lakes was formulated in 1997 at an estimated cost of Rs. 637 crore. The lake-wise break up is given as under:-

Government while considering the proposal directed the Ministry to seek external assistance for the schemes except for Dal Lake which was approved, in principle. A detailed project report for Dal Lake Conservation Plan has been prepared at an estimated cost of Rs. 162.87 crore. Work on this lake is yet to begin. Proposals of 3 small lakes, namely, Powai in Mumbai, Kodaikanal and Ooty in Tamil Nadu have been approved at a total cost of Rs. 14.90 crore in May,2001. The lake-wise break up is: Powai- Rs. 6.62 crore, Kodaikanal-Rs. 6.33 crore, Ooty- Rs. 1.95 crore. A provision of Rs. 10 crore is available for NLCP in 2001-02 out of which an amount of Rs. 9 crore has been released for the above 3 lakes i.e. Powai Lake-Rs. 4 crore, Kodaikanal lake-Rs. 4 crore, Ooty lake-Rs. 1 crore.
